La Grande Etape

the two stage tour test

For many amateurs taking part in a major European sportive like the Etape is a bucket list experience.  And rightly so but once that box has been ticked the attraction of jostling through the crowds to get on a coach to reach a hotel 50 or 60 kilometres away, the consequent delays, not to mention the cost, make many review that decision in favour of something a little more tailored to them.  This is, of course, what we specialise in and La Grande Etape was our version of the famous sportive specially commission for 2019. This replica of the last two mountain stages of the 2019 Tour de France, with mountain top finishes in Tignes and Val Thorens, offered an equal if not greater challenge as the sportive but avoided the crowds, queues and the general hassle of the event itself.  With nearly 8000m of climbing in just two days and the mighty Col de l’Iseran lying in wait too this was not a tour for the faint-hearted. Altitude as well as average gradients well in excess of 7% will tested our clients legs.  The tour was supported on road by a van and mechanic/driver as well as our professional ride leaders.  This was a challenge which appealed to those who have an instinct for the out of the ordinary.

"Just returning from the most wonderful week in Mallorca! Breathtaking scenery, lovely hotel, great food, fantastic company & loads of fun! Above all Dyll, Matt, Derek & Julia were the best guides & hosts- doing absolutely everything to accommodate every ability & ambition. Their huge passion for cycling is truly infectious. I‘m sure everyone in our group did & saw more than they could ever have imagined under their encouragement & incredible knowledge of the island & the sport. We are all leaving with HUGE smiles on our faces & just wishing we could stay longer! Thanks so much for everything & looking forward to booking up the next trip! " Claire Robinson
